Translational Control by the Eukaryotic Ribosome
The ribosome plays a universally conserved role in catalyzing protein synthesis. Kondrashov et al. (2011) now provide evidence that the loss of function of ribosomal protein L38 in mice leads to a selective reduction in the translation of Hox mRNAs, thus suggesting that ribosomal proteins play a critical role during embryonic development.

Stem cells give rise to tissues and organs during development and maintain their integrity during adulthood. They have the potential to self-renew or differentiate at each division. To ensure proper organ growth and homeostasis, self-renewal versus differentiation decisions need to be tightly controlled. Systematic genetic studies in Drosophila melanogaster are revealing extensive regulatory ne...
متن کاملAssessing gene-level translational control from ribosome profiling
MOTIVATION The translational landscape of diverse cellular systems remains largely uncharacterized. A detailed understanding of the control of gene expression at the level of messenger RNA translation is vital to elucidating a systems-level view of complex molecular programs in the cell. Establishing the degree to which such post-transcriptional regulation can mediate specific phenotypes is sim...

متن کاملComparing the Expression Levels of Alkaline Phosphatase, Gfra1, Lin28, and Sall4 Genes in Embryonic Stem Cells, Spermatogonial Stem Cells, and Embryonic Stem-Like Cells in Mice
Background and purpose: Spermatogenesis is a well-organized process that is influenced by a variety of factors. Alkaline phosphatase, and Gfra1, Lin28, and Sall4 genes are among the key players in this interconnected process. This study aimed to investigate the expression levels of Gfra1, Lin28, and Sall4 genes in embryonic, spermatogonial, and embryonic stem-like (ES-like) cells in mice. Mate...
